Fragonia is steam distilled from the leaf and terminal branches of Agonis fragrans, a species also classified as Taxandria fragrans. It belongs to the Myrtaceae family, alongside eucalyptus, tea tree and kunzea. The aroma opens fresh and cineolic with a citrus lift, then settles into something soft, floral and faintly woody. The name Fragonia is a registered trade mark, and the species is endemic to a narrow band of south-west Western Australia.
From bush to bottle
Fragonia is grown on a single property in south-west Western Australia rather than collected from scattered wild stands. Growing it in one place is what keeps the constituent profile consistent from batch to batch. The property follows sustainable farming practices, with minimal and careful use of herbicides and fertilisers.
The harvest takes the leaf and the terminal branches, which is where the oil is concentrated. The woody older stems are left behind. Cutting the terminal growth also encourages the shrub to reshoot, so the same plants keep producing season after season.
The cut material is distilled with gentle saturated steam. Saturated steam sits at the boiling point of water rather than above it, so the still runs cooler and slower than a high pressure or superheated system. Nothing is added and nothing is taken out. What comes off the condenser is the finished oil.
Superheated or high pressure steam pushes oil out of plant material faster, which means more litres per hour and a lower cost per kilo. It also degrades the lighter and more fragile molecules on the way through. Saturated steam gives up that speed to keep the temperature down.
For Fragonia that trade matters more than most, because the compounds that make it distinctive are the delicate ones. Linalool and alpha-terpineol together account for roughly 11 to 21% of the oil, and they are the two that give it a soft floral edge instead of a flat medicinal one. Run the still hot and you keep the cineole and the pinene but you lose the character.
