Kunzea oil is steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ambigua, an aromatic shrub native to Tasmania and south-eastern Australia. It sits in the Myrtaceae family alongside eucalyptus, tea tree and lemon myrtle. But it smells nothing like them, and its constituent profile is genuinely unusual: the aroma is clean and fresh with a hint of spice. Locals called the plant tick bush for generations. Zea was the first company in the world to build a wellness range around it.
From bush to bottle
Kunzea grows so readily in North-East Tasmania and on the Bass Strait islands that plenty of locals treat it as a weed. It wants poor, sandy soil, and it takes no fertiliser and no spray: the farmers simply leave it to grow. It is still predominantly wild harvested, and plantations are now being established alongside that, so supply can grow without leaning harder on the bush.
A new plant is not simply mown. It is hand cut at 12 months, lightly harvested at 24, and only fully harvested at 36, which gives the root structure time to bind into the sandy soil. After that it is cut one to two times a year, foliage and green branchlets only, so it reshoots and keeps producing.
The bins go straight from the paddock to the still the same day, because Kunzea biomass should not sit overnight. Steam permeates the plant material, the volatile oil lifts with it, and it is condensed and separated. The water for the steam comes from the spring that runs beneath the still house. What comes out of the still is not waste. The spent mulch is stacked in the paddock and turned every two to three weeks, and after about four months it has broken down into compost that goes back onto the land.
Here is the part most brands never mention. How long you distil changes what ends up in the bottle. Steam starts coming through the biomass in 25 to 30 minutes, and you can smell the oil lifting off it. But research indicates that running the distillation out to about three hours raises the percentage of the heavier active constituents, viridiflorol among them, from roughly 10% to 17% of the oil. Viridiflorol carries Kunzea’s deep, grounding, balsamic note and is one of the constituents studied for anti-inflammatory activity.
A shorter run is cheaper, gives you more litres per hour, and still lets you call it pure Kunzea oil. We run the full three hours and accept the lower yield, because we would rather have the heavier constituents in the bottle than off the clock. Kunzea is a low yielding plant regardless: a five cubic metre bin of biomass gives only about 5 to 6kg of oil.
Quality and testing
Every batch is tested and carries a certificate of analysis. Recent batches have been tested by Southern Cross University, and the certificate declares the oil 100% natural, with no artificial or nature-identical additions.

Kunzea ambigua is native to Tasmania and a thin strip of south-eastern Australia. The stands we draw from sit along the north-east coast and the Bass Strait islands, on Pyemmairrener country, where salt wind and poor sandy soil are exactly the conditions the plant wants. Grow it somewhere comfortable and the oil is not the same.

A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Kunzea ambigua in North-East Tasmania. It is single origin and GC/MS tested, so you can see exactly what is in each batch. Locals knew the plant as tick bush; today it is one of Australia’s most distinctive native oils.
Clean, fresh and foresty with a hint of spice and a soft woody base. It is far less sharp than tea tree and less camphoraceous than eucalyptus, which is why so many people who dislike those two get on with Kunzea.
Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond and patch test first. It is also a long-standing favourite as a sauna oil.

Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Some essential oils are not suitable around certain animals, so check with your vet before diffusing around pets.
