Grown and distilled in New South Wales

It is a paperbark, and it is the sweetest smelling leaf oil in Australia.

Nerolina Essential Oil 10mL

Nerolina comes from Melaleuca quinquenervia, the broad-leaved paperbark that grows in the wet coastal country of New South Wales. It is the same species that gives us niaouli, but this is a different chemotype entirely. Nearly two thirds of the oil is nerolidol, which is why it smells soft and floral where its tea tree relatives smell medicinal.

What Nerolina actually is.

Nerolina is steam distilled from the leaves and terminal branches of Melaleuca quinquenervia, the broad-leaved paperbark. The species name means five-veined, after the parallel veins running down each leaf. The same tree yields several very different oils depending on its chemotype, and this one is the linalool type. Zea's is grown on Gumbainggir and Dainggatti lands in New South Wales.

From bush to bottle

Step one · grown

It stands in water

The broad-leaved paperbark grows in swampy coastal ground, seasonal wetlands and the edges of estuaries. Its spongy layered bark is an adaptation to exactly that: wet feet, periodic flooding and fire. It is a tree that thrives where most will not, which is part of why it is so widely planted along the eastern seaboard.

Step two · harvested

Leaves and terminal branches

The harvest takes the leaves and the terminal branches, which is where the oil is held. Older woody growth is left on the tree. Cutting the terminal growth prompts the tree to reshoot, so the same stand keeps producing rather than being cleared.

Step three · distilled

Steam distilled, nothing added

Steam passes through the leaf material, lifts the volatile oil with it, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added and nothing is removed afterwards. What comes off the condenser is what goes in the bottle, and every batch is GC/MS tested to confirm it.

Broad-leaved paperbark foliage, the source of the nerolidol-rich oil

One tree, several completely different oils.

Melaleuca quinquenervia is one of those species that refuses to produce a single consistent oil. Depending on the population, the same tree yields a cineole-dominant oil sold as niaouli, a nerolidol type, or a linalool type. They smell nothing alike and they are not interchangeable, which is why the chemotype has to be stated rather than assumed.

This is the linalool chemotype, and its published specification runs to 48 to 65% nerolidol and 25 to 45% linalool. Nerolidol is a heavier, softer sesquiterpene alcohol that carries a faint green floral note, and linalool sits over the top of it. Between them they leave almost no room for the sharp cineole edge people expect from a melaleuca. That is the whole character of the oil, and it is the reason it blends so well with the more medicinal Australian natives.

It grows with its feet in the water.

The broad-leaved paperbark belongs to the wet coastal country of New South Wales and Queensland, on Gumbainggir and Dainggatti lands. Swamp margins, seasonal wetlands and estuary edges are its natural ground. The layered papery bark that gives the tree its name is what lets it survive flooding and fire in the same landscape.

Questions, answered

What is Nerolina Essential Oil?

A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves and terminal branches of Melaleuca quinquenervia in New South Wales. It is single origin and GC/MS tested. The chemotype matters with this species, and this is the linalool type.

What does it smell like?

Soft, floral, sweet and slightly earthy. It is the gentlest of the Australian melaleucas, with almost none of the sharp medicinal note people expect from tea tree.

How do I use it?

Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.

Why does the chemotype matter?

Melaleuca quinquenervia produces several very different oils depending on the population it comes from. A cineole-dominant one is sold as niaouli and smells sharply medicinal. This is the linalool chemotype, at 48 to 65% nerolidol and 25 to 45% linalool, which is why it smells floral instead.

Is Nerolina the same as niaouli?

Same species, different chemotype and a completely different aroma. Niaouli is the cineole type. If you want the soft floral one, you want this.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.

Is it tested?

Yes. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis, which is how the specifications on this page are established.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Check with your vet before diffusing around pets.

How should I store it?

Below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap on firmly. The lighter constituents are always the first to escape.
