Grown and distilled in Australia

Half the oil is a compound most eucalyptus never makes at all.

Peppermint Gum Eucalyptus Essential Oil 10mL

Peppermint Gum comes from Eucalyptus dives, and specifically the piperitone chemotype. Piperitone makes up 40 to 50% of the oil and is what gives it a genuinely minty edge, sitting over an alpha-phellandrene base. It is a eucalypt that smells like a mint, which is not a description that fits many trees.

What Peppermint Gum actually is.

Peppermint Gum is steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus dives, the broad-leaved peppermint. The common name comes from the aroma of the crushed leaf rather than from any relationship to true peppermint, which is a mint and not a tree at all. Zea's is grown on Ngunnawal land.

From bush to bottle

Narrow blue-grey foliage of Eucalyptus dives
Step one · grown

High country eucalypt

Eucalyptus dives grows through the cooler tablelands and high country of south-eastern Australia. Like most eucalypts it wants poor soil and full sun, and it takes neither fertiliser nor irrigation to produce a heavy leaf crop.

Peppermint Gum Essential Oil styled with foliage
Step two · harvested

Leaf only, cut to reshoot

Only leaf material goes to the still. Cutting the leafy growth prompts the tree to reshoot, so the same stand is harvested repeatedly rather than cleared. The oil is held in glands throughout the leaf, which is why a crushed leaf smells so strongly.

Step three · distilled

Steam distilled, then tested

Steam passes through the leaf, lifts the volatile oil, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added. Every batch is GC/MS tested, which is where the piperitone and phellandrene figures on this page come from.

Peppermint Gum Essential Oil

The chemotype is the whole product.

Eucalyptus dives does not produce one oil. Depending on the population, it yields a cineole type, a phellandrene type, or the piperitone type. They are the same species and they smell distinctly different, which is why any serious supplier states the chemotype on the label rather than just the species name.

This is the piperitone chemotype: piperitone at 40 to 50% and alpha-phellandrene at 20 to 40%. Piperitone is a ketone with a cool, minty character, and it is the compound that makes this oil smell the way it does. A cineole-type Eucalyptus dives would smell like a conventional eucalyptus and would not be interchangeable with this.

Quality and testing

What “100% pure” actually means on this bottle.

Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The physical specifications shown are the supplier's published range for this chemotype; natural oils vary between batches, which is exactly why each one is tested rather than assumed.

Eucalyptus dives foliage against the light

A quintessentially Australian smell, from the high country.

Eucalyptus dives grows through the cooler tablelands of south-eastern Australia, and Zea's comes from Ngunnawal land. Crush a leaf between your fingers in that country and you get the whole oil at once: eucalypt first, then a distinct cool mint behind it.

Ways to use it

Diffuse it

3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The simplest way in.

Blend it

Peppermint Gum blends with other Australian natives, particularly Kunzea, Tasmanian Lavender and Rosalina.

Diluted on skin

One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.

On a tissue

One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.

Room and linen mist

A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.

In the bath

Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.

Natural cleaning

A few drops in a homemade surface spray as a fresh deodoriser.

A chest rub

3 to 5 drops blended into melted beeswax and jojoba oil.

Using it safely

  • For external use only. Never apply undiluted, and never take it internally.
  • Always dilute in a carrier oil before skin contact, and patch test first.
  • Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your health practitioner first.
  • Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Store below 30°C, out of direct sunlight.

Questions, answered

What is Peppermint Gum Eucalyptus Essential Oil?

A 100% pure essential oil, steam distilled from the leaves of Eucalyptus dives, the piperitone chemotype, grown in Australia. It is single origin and GC/MS tested.

What does it smell like?

Minty and herbaceous over a eucalypt base. The mint is genuine and comes from piperitone, not from any added mint oil.

How do I use it?

Start with 3 to 6 drops in a diffuser. For skin, dilute one or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond, and patch test first.

What does CT piperitone mean?

CT stands for chemotype. Eucalyptus dives produces several different oils depending on the population, and this is the piperitone type, at 40 to 50% piperitone. A cineole-type oil from the same species would smell like a conventional eucalyptus.

Is there any actual peppermint in it?

None. It is 100% pure Eucalyptus dives. The minty character comes from piperitone, a compound the tree makes itself. True peppermint is Mentha piperita, a herb, and a completely different plant.

Can I put it straight on my skin?

No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.

Is it tested?

Yes. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis, which is how the specifications on this page are established.

Is it safe around children and pets?

Keep it out of reach of children and never apply it undiluted. Diffuse in a ventilated room rather than a closed space. Check with your vet before diffusing around pets.

How should I store it?

Below 30°C in a dry place away from direct sunlight, with the cap on firmly. The lighter constituents are always the first to escape.

How do the pack savings work?
